Meatless Monday 1
March 4, 2014
For this week the first of the six
Meatless Monday’s I fully participated and didn’t eat meat all day. The most difficult part was remembering not
to eat meat. My meal that was most
affected by eating a meatless diet was my dinner, since I was with my boyfriend
who was still able to eat meat. However,
instead of eating meat as my source of protein I ate a black bean veggie burger
which was high in protein and just as delicious. Going meatless on Monday has not impacted the
rest of my week because I normally eat very little meat. I observed that the biggest difficulty when
avoiding meat is if you’re eating out and are normally used to including meat
in your meal, or getting a meat based meal.
I think that I spent less money by eating meatless because I only ate
meals I made myself out of groceries I already had. This was definitely healthier for me and
better on my budget. Since, I don’t have
meat in my fridge it was also easier to not be tempted because it wasn’t
everywhere I looked like it is on menu’s.
Not eating meat affected others around me a little bit but not too
much. My boyfriend was affected because
when we went to Tim Horton’s on the way home from the gym he got a chicken
sandwich and I didn’t order anything but tea because I wanted to wait till I
could make a meal at home. Although it
was tempting because I was hungry and the food was right there and available I
held out and made a great salad when I got home. I used resources such as vegetables, fruits,
whole grains, oatmeal, and veggie burgers.
Luckily I eat these items regularly so they were already in my
kitchen. As a result of my experience I
think that I would like to continue the Meatless Monday idea even after we are
done with the assignment in class. I
think it would be very beneficial to my health and the environment.
